Outstanding, truly exceptional
I am a history teacher in the US with significant background knowledge of Brazil, and I must say that Juan's tour will prompt me to significantly change my curriculum when I teach Brazilian history. I booked Juan by emailing him directly using his website. He replied within the day, offered me a few dates, and I booked him on the spot. We communicated a few times over email and he picked us up at the airport when we arrived. We began the tour without day (seven hours!) and he took us to a "quadra modelo," a model residential area that I suspect most tourists never see, since Brasilia is "monumental." Well, seeing the plans (and the reality) for "residential" Brasilia was truly every opening. Juan seemed to know every detail and story about a city that is famously "ahistorical." After a delicious lunch at Juan's favorite local joint (all Brazilians around us) we visited churches, monuments, museums, you name it. Juan even booked us to go inside the astonishingly designed Itamaraty Palace, the ministry of foreign affairs building. Juan would drive us in his personal car to a site, we would get out, listen to his insightful and comprehensive comments, linger for as long as we wanted, and the get in his car and go to the next site (Brasilia needs to be done by car; it's too expansive to do it otherwise.) Night fall came and Juan drove us across the lake to take pictures of the illuminated and architecturally appealing JK Bridge, and we finished at the Alvorada Presidential Place, gorgeously illuminated in white. Ask Juan about politics too if you want to get a passionate and open review of recent events (I love the fact that he was so open and generous with his comments.) I could keep expounding on this wonderful day with Juan. He is encyclopedic in his knowledge, warm in his personality, flexible in his approach to site visit, and passionate in his love for Brasilia (ah...and how could I forget his singing! I won't spoil the surprise, but he took us to yet another architectural marvel, and without skipping a beat, broke out in song to demonstrate the astounding acoustics of a site one would never associate or expect to be such.) If you go to Brasilia, whatever else you do, make sure to contact Juan. He'll make you fall with Brasilia.

The only way to do Brasilia
Brasilia is a unique place and don't be fooled into thinking you can do it on your own - you really won't understand it without some decent interpretation. That is what Juan provides. He will give you an excellent understanding of the history and architecture of what is one of the most unique places on earth. His English is excellent and he really knows his history. A couple of tips
1) Monday is not the best day for Brasilia.
2) Make sure you include the Itamaraty Palace.
3) If you want to see something really different, ask him to take you to the Valley of the Dawn in the afternoon. It is best to arrive there about 1430.

Juan Luis is the guide you are looking for...
I have hired Juan Luis to serve as the guide and organizer for several business delegations to Brasilia as well as my personal travel to the region. He is extremely professional, knowledgeable and organized. He knows all the sites, restaurants and people in Brasilia and treats everyone with respect and courtesy. He even helped us secure several meetings and visits that we were otherwise unable to arrange on our own. I recommend him highly for both personal and business travel. He is a class act and a very nice person.
